Sciatica

What is sciatica?

Sciatica isn’t a condition; it’s the name for the symptoms — pain, numbness, and weakness — caused by compression of your sciatic nerve. Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body, extending from your lower back through both of your legs, ending just above your knees.

Sciatica is highly variable. You may have a shooting or stabbing pain or a dull ache, and your pain can change in its severity. For example, sciatica is often worse after you sit still for a long time.

Depending on the location of the nerve compression, sciatica can radiate down one or both legs, causing pain or numbness along the nerve. You could also develop a pins-and-needles sensation in your feet and toes.

What causes sciatica?

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc in your lumbar spine. Your vertebrae are cushioned by rubber discs that absorb shock and help you to bend and twist. Each disc has a rubbery outer shell and a gel-like interior.

When the outer shell is damaged, the inner layer can bulge out. There’s very little room in your spine, so the bulging disc in your lower spine usually compresses your sciatic nerve.

Other conditions that can cause sciatica include:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Tumors
  • Infections
  • Other injuries to your spine or back muscles

Any injury or condition that reduces the space available for your sciatic nerve to pass through your spine can lead to sciatica.

How is sciatica treated?

Our team at Renewed Wellness provide comprehensive exams to diagnose the cause of your sciatica before creating a customized treatment plan to relieve your pain and heal your back. This plan may include:

  • Medical treatments including anti-inflammatory medication or spinal injections to reduce swelling
  • Chiropractic care to correct the alignment of your spine and reduce muscle tension
  • K-laser therapy to stimulate your body’s natural healing response
  • Massage therapy to relieve muscle tension and stimulate circulation
  • Functional rehabilitation to improve your posture and movement

Our doctors may also recommend nutritional changes and regular exercise to both strengthen your body and help you lose weight, which could reduce the stress on your lower spine.
